Virginia Creeper Trail, Abingdon, Virginia to Whitetop Mountian, North Carolina

VA Creeper Trail The Virginia Creeper Trail passes through 34 miles of some of the most beautiful scenery in Southwest Virginia as it gently climbs from Abingdon to Whitetop Mountain, North Carolina. The trail follows the route of a major Indian trace leading from present day North Carolina to the Ohio River along the Big Sandy, and later became part of the route of the Virginia-Carolina Railroad. In the 1980's, Norfolk and Western sold its right of way to the towns of Abingdon and Damascus and the National Forest Service. The Virginia Creeper Trail is part of the wonderful nationwide Rail to Trails movement, and is now used by cyclists, equestrians, joggers, and cross-country skiers.

From Interstate 81, take exit 17 and head west toward Abingdon. Turn right at the first intersection--Green Springs Road--and you'll see the trailhead just a short distance away. The trail is out and back, so there is no real trail finding to do. If you want a complete map and history of the Virginia Creeper Trail, or if you would like to participate in protecting and improving the Trail, write to:
